The Sustainable Fiber Blends I Use for Every Handweaving Project (No Greenwashing, No Frustrating Shrinkage)

Last October, I hung a 4-foot wide tapestry I'd spent 12 hours weaving on my living room wall, proud that I'd used 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton for the low-impact fiber choice. Three weeks later, I walked past it and watched the bottom 6 inches fray and unravel, the cotton stretched thin from the weight of the hanging fabric. I composted it a week later, feeling like I'd wasted both my time and the resources that went into growing, harvesting, and processing that cotton. That was the moment I stopped assuming single-fiber "sustainable" projects were automatically the most eco-friendly option. Over the past 6 months, I've tested 17 different third-party certified sustainable fiber blends for hand weaving, and I've learned that the right blend doesn't just reduce the upfront environmental impact of your materials---it creates finished pieces that last 2, 3, even 5 times longer than single-fiber alternatives, cutting down on waste far more effectively than chasing the "purest" single natural fiber. Below are the 4 blends I keep coming back to for every project, no vague marketing claims, just fibers with verifiable certifications and real, tested performance for hand weavers of all skill levels.

Organic cotton has long been the go-to "sustainable" fiber for new weavers, but it has a major flaw: it stretches, pills, and wrinkles like crazy, even when woven tightly. Blending it with GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certified post-consumer recycled polyester fixes almost all of those pain points, without adding meaningful environmental overhead. Organic cotton uses 91% less water than conventional cotton, and is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, so its upfront impact is already far lower than standard cotton. The GRS-certified recycled polyester is made from plastic bottles and discarded polyester fabric diverted from landfills and oceans, so it gives waste a second life instead of sitting in a dump for centuries. I prefer a 70/30 cotton/recycled poly mix for most projects, but you can go up to 50/50 if you want extra durability for high-wear items. I use this blend for almost all my everyday woven goods: tea towels, tote bags, throw pillow covers, and kids' play mats. The small amount of recycled poly adds enough structure that the fabric doesn't stretch out of shape when you haul 10 pounds of library books in a tote, or scrub a tea towel with a stiff brush, and it cuts pilling by 80% compared to 100% organic cotton, so the fabric looks new for years instead of months. For weaving, use a 10 or 12-dent reed for a tight, durable weave, and don't beat too hard: friction from a heavy beater can melt the poly content if you're working with very tight tension.

For heavy-duty, high-wear projects, my go-to blend is RWS (Responsible Wool Standard) certified organic wool paired with low-input hemp, and it outperforms almost every single-fiber natural option on the market for durability. Hemp is one of the most low-impact natural fibers available: it grows 4x faster than cotton, requires no pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, and enriches the soil it's grown in rather than depleting it. The RWS-certified wool comes from sheep raised on regenerative pastures without mulesing, with strict standards for animal welfare and land management, so you don't have to worry about supporting exploitative farming practices. I use a 60/40 hemp/wool blend for area rugs, winter scarves, heavy throw blankets, and even outdoor patio cushion covers. Hemp is naturally mildew and UV-resistant, so outdoor pieces made with this blend last 3x longer than 100% wool or 100% cotton alternatives, and the wool adds softness and elasticity so the fabric doesn't feel scratchy against skin. I've had a hemp/wool rug in my entryway for 8 months now, with two dogs and a toddler running over it daily, and there's not a single frayed edge or pilled patch---something I never got with the 100% New Zealand wool rug I used to own. For weaving, use an 8 or 10-dent reed for a tight, sturdy weave, and avoid using overly soft, delicate yarns, as raw hemp can be slightly stiff when you first start weaving, and soft yarns will break easily under tension.

If you want a lightweight, breathable blend with a luxurious drape for warm-weather projects, Tencel lyocell paired with GOTS-certified organic linen is the gold standard, and it's far more sustainable than either fiber on its own. Tencel (a branded lyocell) is made from sustainably sourced eucalyptus wood, grown on farms that don't compete with food crops for land, and processed in a closed-loop system that recycles 99% of the solvent used to break down the wood pulp, using 95% less water than conventional cotton. Organic linen is also an extremely low-impact fiber: flax (the plant linen is made from) grows with almost no water or pesticides, and every part of the plant is used for other products (linseed oil, animal feed, construction material) so there's almost no waste from the growing process. I prefer a 50/50 mix of the two for most projects: Tencel adds softness, drape, and wrinkle resistance, while linen adds structure, durability, and natural temperature regulation. I use this blend for summer scarves, lightweight table runners, baby swaddle blankets, and even handwoven summer tops. The finished fabric has a subtle, soft sheen that looks far more expensive than either fiber on its own, and it's naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial, so it's perfect for pieces that touch skin or food. For weaving, use a 12 or 14-dent reed for a light, breathable weave, and avoid packing the weft too tightly, as the linen content can make the fabric too stiff if beaten too hard.

For next-to-skin projects, or if you want to reduce waste by using up leftover scrap yarn, my favorite blend is upcycled post-industrial cotton paired with certified closed-loop bamboo lyocell. Upcycled post-industrial cotton is made from leftover cotton scraps from garment manufacturing that would otherwise be thrown away, so it has almost no additional environmental impact beyond transport and processing. When paired with certified closed-loop bamboo lyocell (make sure it's not cheap bamboo viscose, which is processed with toxic carbon disulfide and has a far higher environmental footprint than conventional cotton), you get an ultra-soft, moisture-wicking blend that's perfect for sensitive skin. I use this blend for baby clothes, knit-weave hybrid scarves, kitchen towels, and lightweight baby blankets. The bamboo adds softness and natural antibacterial properties, while the upcycled cotton adds structure so the fabric doesn't stretch out of shape or get slinky like pure bamboo lyocell can. I made a set of 6 bamboo/cotton dishcloths last month, and they've held up to daily washings for 3 months with no fraying or pilling, far longer than the 100% cotton dishcloths I used to make before. For weaving, use a 14 or 16-dent reed for a soft, flexible weave, and avoid using a heavy beat, as the lightweight blend can be easily distorted if packed too tightly.

Before you buy any blend marketed as "sustainable," keep an eye out for these common greenwashing red flags that make even well-intentioned purchases worse for the planet than conventional options:

  • Avoid unregulated "bamboo" or "rayon" blends that don't specify they're lyocell or Tencel. Most cheap bamboo fabric is made with a toxic viscose process that releases harmful chemicals into waterways, and has a higher carbon footprint than conventional cotton.
  • Skip blends that mix a small amount of "organic" fiber with a large amount of conventional cotton or polyester. A 10% organic cotton/90% conventional cotton blend has almost no environmental benefit over 100% conventional cotton, and the small amount of organic fiber is often just used for marketing.
  • Make sure all natural fibers in your blend have third-party certifications: GOTS for organic cotton and wool, GRS for recycled fibers, FSC for Tencel/lyocell wood pulp, and RWS for wool. If a brand can't provide proof of certification for their claims, it's almost certainly greenwashing.

Last month, I wove a set of 4 hemp/wool oven mitts for my sister, who works as a line cook and goes through 2 pairs of cheap cotton oven mitts a year. She's had these for 3 months now, uses them every shift, and there's not a single burn mark or frayed edge. That's the thing about good sustainable blends: they don't just reduce the impact of the materials you use to weave, they create pieces that people actually use for years, instead of throwing away after a few months. You don't have to hunt down rare, expensive specialty fibers to weave sustainably. Sometimes the best choice is a simple, certified blend that's built to last, for you, for the planet, and for the person who gets to keep your finished piece long after you've woven it.
